The Department of Applied Mechanics is responsible for Mechanical Engineering research at Chalmers. The five different research divisions conduct world leading research, usually in close collaboration with national and international industries. Within the Department of Applied Physics a wide array of experimental and theoretical applied physics is conducted. From basic research into the physics of biological membranes to applied projects concerning the development of new materials for fuel cell applications. Our research profile includes biological physics, disordered systems, complex oxides, surface- and nano-physics, materials for energy-applications and nuclear technology.

The department is strongly engaged in the physics education both at Chalmers and Gothenburg University. This is done in collaboration with the Department of Fundamental Physics at Chalmers and the Department of Physics at Gothenburg University.

Civil and Environmental Engineering deals with construction in the community. It gives us houses to live in, roads to travel on and water to drink. It includes everything from planning to full-scale operation. The vision is to build a sustainable society, taking into account the environment, energy and economics.

The name Civil and Environmental Engineering also describes the work that is carried out. Civil engineering is about creating buildings and infrastructure whilst Environmental engineering deals with everything that construction produces, such as waste and water.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is strongly international, with 76 faculty and 55 PhD students from about 30 countries. CSE provides a dynamic research environment and has groups of world renown in a number of fields. The research spans the whole spectrum, from theoretical underpinnings to applied systems development. There is extensive national and international collaboration with academia and industry. Industrial collaborators in Sweden include Volvo, Saab, Ericsson and Saab Space, as well as the many smaller IT companies associated with Chalmers.

The research within the department covers a wide field within the areas energy and environment/sustainable development, from a global perspective to industrial, building, and product scale. The research fields include: Energy technology and energy conversion, both experimentally and theoretically.

Development, use and evaluation of methods and tools for analysis of technical systems, regarding both environment/sustainable development and energy. Another field is Complex Systems, with theory and applications ranging from biochemical systems to social ones. We also give courses in these and related fields.

The Department of Fundamental Physics consists of three research groups: Subatomic Physics, Mathematical Physics, and Theoretical Elementary Particle Physics. The area of research covers different aspects of subatomic physics. It includes experimental as well as theoretical nuclear physics, theoretical elementary particle physics with focus on gauge theories and/or string/M-theory, and mathematical physics with emphasis on geometric or algebraic aspects of string/M-theory. Within the department there is also an interest in astrophysics and cosmology. We operate under the framework of "Fysikcentrum Goeteborg", that consists of the two Chalmers departments: Department of Applied Physics ant Department of Fundamental Physics, and the Department of Physics at Goeteborg University.

The Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology consists of six research groups and has a total staff of around 60 persons. The research activities span from basic research on nanostructural materials to product- and process related issues within materials and manufacturing technology.

The research is carried out in close collaboration with national and international industries and universities. Our graduate as well as undergraduate education is organized in a wide range of courses, we are involved in three master programmes and three graduate schools.

The mathematical sciences are fundamental and indispensable to a large part of modern science and engineering. Progress in other disciplines is often linked to an increased use of mathematics. Mathematics is however also a subject in itself, and fundamental research is a necessary condition for its many applications.

The department of Mathematical Sciences is part of both Chalmers and the Goeteborg University, and it offers high-quality research and education in the fields of mathematics.

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, MC2, is doing research and education with focus on future electronics, photonics and micro-/nanosystems. The materials, devices and systems studied find their applications in future systems for wireless communication, data transmission over fibre links, sensor systems, quantum computers and completely new forms of nanoelectronics.

The major competence at the Department of Product and Production Development is in the areas of product design, product development and production systems development and in the interplay between these disciplines. Research at the Department focuses largely on shortening the lead time from needs to finished products while simultaneously achieving added value for the customer. Our largest customers are in the vehicle and manufacturing industries. Research is also conducted within the Wingquist Laboratory and the Da Vinci Center.

Our research is driven by the curiosity to learn more about the universe and our earth. Through studies of the history of the universe and by studying what is happening on the earth today we search for a greater understanding of the origin of the universe, the earth, and the life. Shipping and marine technology is organizing a coherent research and education within a wide knowledge area with its origin in programs at Chalmers for education of seafarers and naval architects. These activities in operation and design have been complemented with competence within logistics/economy, environment and human factors.

At the Department of Signals and Systems, we conduct worldleading research in biomedical engineering, antennas and signal processing, control, automation and mechatronics, and communication systems. Our research deals to a large extent with the modeling and development of efficient systems for extracting and processing information. The systems are often affected by signals from the environment which we cannot change and signals that we produce our selves to control the systems. Systems which our researchers deal with include hearing aids, robots, power chains, plants, and mobile phones.
