General description

Today we use more industrial chemicals than ever to modify and control our environment. Daily we hear of the health risks and environmental effects involved, but what are we really dealing with? Is there such a thing as a safe chemical and what would it be like? The main goal of this course is to give an understanding of the effects industrial and community discharges have on nature and humans. The course topics include for example: Sources of environmental pollutants; local, regional and global effects on the ecosystem and humans; risk assessment and legislation concerning environmental pollution. Besides studying the course naturally includes other aspects of the Finnish environment: sauna, beer, parties, kyykkä, nightless summer nights...
