The Department of Economics is committed to academic excellence. In a recent comparison, sponsored by the European Economic Association and published in the Journal of the European Economic Association (JEEA, vol. 1(6) (2003) pp. 1346-1366), it was ranked number 52 in the world, number 9 in the European Union, and number 2 in Spain. In updated ranking provided by econphd.net (http://www.econphd.net/rank/rallec.htm), the Department is ranked 46 in the world, number 9 in the European Union, and number 1 in Spain.

Since its inception in 1990, the Department of Economics has been characterized by its international composition. During the last 10 years the proportion of faculty members not born in Spain has been between 25 and 30 per cent. Presently, there are faculty members from 10 different nationalities.
